Producer description

One of the eight producers who originally created the DO Rueda back in 1980, the bodega dates as far back as 1946, though the family has been growing vines in the area for five generations. The work of Félix Lorenzo Cachazo continues today with his children Eduardo (sales manager) and Ángela (winemaker). Located in Pozaldez (Valladolid), they own 35 hectares of vineyards, including 9 hectares of pre-phylloxera vines destined for their barrel-fermented Verdejo.

The characteristic soils in the DO Rueda are stony with limestone, allowing good drainage. The significant difference in temperature between day and night (sometimes up to 20°C) means that Rueda benefits from a slower ripening process and a more aromatic expression of the Verdejo grape.

The story of Félix Lorenzo offers an accurate view of what has changed in the area over recent decades: the large oak vats that were historically used to store the wine in underground cellars have almost disappeared in order to make way for modern equipment. As an original producer in the Rueda región, Félix continues to pave the way by producing a vibrant modern expression of the region, whilst steering away from the traditional, oxidative styles of the past.

100% Verdejo, hand harvested. Carrasviñas is the flagship wine of the bodega evolving from the old oxidative “Amontillados” wines (a mixture of Verdejo and Palomino Fino), to a fresher single varietal Verdejo wine, now a reference point in Rueda. Grapes are destemmed and crushed with a gentle pressing. Light clarification with the help of low temperature before being transferred directly to French oak barrels of 300L and 500L for spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged for 6 months during which time regular bâtonage adds structure and complexity. Clarification in stainless steel vats and filtration prior to bottling. The wine undergoes 5 months bottle ageing before release.

Tasting note

Straw yellow with greenish reflections, clean and shiny. Complex nose, hints of peach and pear. Aromas of thyme, mint, vanilla and cinnamon, and with marked hints of the typical aromas of this variety; white flowers, aniseed and nuts. The wine is unctuous, broad and of remarkable structure. Elegant sensations of yellow apple, tropical fruit, toasted almonds. Minerals and a long spicy finish.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate (

The 2016 Carrasviñas Fermentado en Barrica brings back memories of the first barrel-fermented Verdejo almost two decades ago, with notes of orange peel and straw and fine spices. The palate is very tasty, with clean flavors and very good length. I wish more wines from Rueda were like this one. 10,000 bottles were filled in May 2017. ( Luis Gutiérrez) Points: 91.
