A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, with a total production of 350 cases per annum. The vines grow on dry chalky outcrops, surrounded by scrub and pine trees that lend the wine richness, yet also elegance with a tempered tannin profile.
The Grenache and Syrah vines give it a typically Mediterranean wine made of gluttony and elegance on a discreet tannic structure.
The Izarn family has run Borie la Vitarèle biodynamically since it was established in 1990. Jean François Izarn sadly passed away in 2015; his wife Cathy & their daughter Camille work hard to continue his legacy. Extending over 18 hectares of vineyards & planted on a mixture of gravel, schist, clay & limestone, this fine estate is hidden away amongst the undulating hills of St. Chinian ‘garrigue’.
Respect for the soil and respect for their wines are key values for the family. They aim to produce very authentic wines that reflect the various soil types, on which their fruit originated. The wines are highly underrated and deserve much more recognition. Here everything is very simple and honest, with a great sense of generosity; the wines are made with nothing to hide – just a lot of hard work in order to obtain the best quality grapes and resulting wines. Their honest winemaking (using natural yeasts, lees contact and a mix of cement tanks as well as large oak barrels) preserves each wine’s personality, with great clarity and purpose. The Izarn family refer to their gentle, hands-off approach to winemaking as a “long, slow infusion”. All wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.
