About the producer

The quietly spoken, charming Jean-Marc Blain, married to Claudine (daughter of the late Jacques Gagnard), fashions Chassagne crus of delicacy and finesse. Since establishing his domaine in 1980 , his wines have seduced the palate with their elegance and subtlety, rather than weight and richness. They now control 10 hectares of vines in Chassagne Montrachet, including holdings in three grands crus: Le Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet. Hard work throughout the growing season and detailed selection are key to this success. Jean-Marc also feels it is very important to have a mixture of vine ages within each vineyard plot, not only to produce a more complex wine, but also to reduce the loss of several years’ production when the old vines need to be replaced. The quality here is very high, with Jean-Marc’s 1er Cru ‘Les Caillerets’ marrying brilliantly a subtle note of white flowers with a hint of toast, culminating in a palate-pleasing salinity on the finale. Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru ‘Les Caillerets’ – Les Caillerets is located at the southern end of the village and sits above Les Champs Gain at an elevation between 250 and 280 meters. The name “Caillerets” refers to the chalky soil found here which contributes to the elegance and finesse typical of wines from this site. Vines were planted between 1954 and 1987. 25-30% new oak.
