Tasting note

The Clos l'Évêque is the best known of the 1er Cru of Mercurey by its surface (21ha), but also by the regularity of its quality. It is the most “Côte de Beaune” of Mercurey with fairly pronounced raspberry flavors and floral (violet) aromas.

About the producer

Domaine de Suremain comprises 18 hectares of vines spread across some of Mercurey’s finest appellations. The property has been in the same family for seven generations and is currently run by Yves Suremain, his wife Marie-Hélène and their son Loïc. Vineyards are situated on the high-slopes and mid-slopes facing to the south and east, in the heart of the appellation. These holdings include no less than 6 different red Mercurey including five 1 er Crus. They also produce one white Mercurey from the 1 er Cru En Sazenay. In all vineyard work the family philosophy is to respect nature, following a “lutte raisonnée” approach, adapting their work and treatments to vintage climatic conditions. Harvest is gathered by hand into small crates before being carefully sorted on ‘une table detri’. Fermentations are carried out in open oak cuves of 50-100hl, cru by cru. Sensitively judged égrappage & pigeage are applied depending on the cru and the vintage. Wines are then matured in French oak barriques (10-15% new) for 14-18 months



Regions Vintage Report:

"The 2019 Burgundy vintage signature is one of low yields and yet high quality. Spring frost and then damp, windy weather at flowering in June resulted in significant loss of potential crop size. Some growers have seen their crops depleted by as much as 50%. Both coulure and millerandage were much in evidence. However, it was the very warm, dry conditions of the summer that were the most telling ingredient, resulting in concentrated acidity, sugar as well as aromatics and flavour. The best red wines offer a style that is both rich and concentrated whilst also retaining marked freshness. The flavours are intense, pure and focused with no sense of excess. The tannin profile is one of tempered shape and structure, framed with beautifully sculpted, creamy dark fruit. The potential for a long sojourn in the cellar is very much in evidence thanks to the wine’s ripe maturity and beautiful balance. Following on from the charm of the 2018s, this new vintage offers a much more emphatically impressive set of credentials, comprising all the necessary attributes for being considered amongst the ranks of top Burgundy vintages. Not least amongst these attributes is the fine consistency the wines exhibit. The best white wines, too, deserve to be championed. They also offer, somewhat surprisingly, a fabulous combination of elevated ripeness alongside telling acidity and freshness, a phenomenon that is not that often seen in white Burgundy. Whilst the 2019 white wines may not possess the bristling pristine, mineral edge and linearity of the 2014s or the best 2018s, it is clear that the most skilled winemakers understand much better nowadays how to cope with warm weather vintages. The best wines have retained fine shape and scope with expressive aromatics and tempered richness. Chablis too shows fine concentration and aromatic intensity.
