About the wine

Wine type

Bottle size

The Viognier is grown in a single vineyard, South Westerly slope about 6 km from False bay which enjoys cool maritime on shore breezes from the Atlantic. The soils are granite-clay loams which restrict yield and allow for retention of acidity and varietal aroma. The cooled grapes were crushed and pressed and the free run Viognier juice settled overnight before being run into second-fill French Allier oak white wine barrels. Half the barrels were inoculated while the other half underwent “wild”, un-inoculated fermentation. About half the wine underwent malolactic fermentation. The wine was matured on the lees for 7 months “sur lie” in barrel before bottling.

Tasting note

The Foundry Viognier is pale in colour, clear and bright with a pronounced greenish hue. The nose is exotic with expressive apricot, spring blossom and creamy citrus nose, but remains elegant and perfumed. These flavours follow through onto the palate which is dense with ripe crushed fresh fruit, succulent juiciness and finishes with a mineral steeliness which makes this wine ideal with food. There is a line of natural acidity running through the wine maintaining freshness and focus.

About the producer

Established in 2000, The Foundry is the brainchild of Meerlust cellar master, Chris Williams, in partnership with his long-term friend James Reid. Working closely with a handful of growers, long-term contracts have been concluded for specific rows of vines to meet The Foundry’s demand for high quality fruit which is expressive of its sourced vineyards. Grapes are vinified, bottled & matured at Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch separately, taking great care not to over-extract or manipulate the fruit. Both traditional and modern techniques are used. Since 2010 The Foundry has had a new home in the Voor-Paardeberg area. Their intention is to eventually locate all of their winemaking activities in the Paardeberg, but will still continue to produce the single vineyard Stellenbosch Syrah and Viognier.
